Q & A with a Running Dad #4

April 29, 2019

Continuing with the Q & A with a Running Dad series, and we have Ian Johnson up next. Let's get personal!

1. Tell me a about yourself

Name Ian Johnson aged 43 father of 3 children Jack 12 (first marriage), Willow 4, Reef 2 partner Lisa of 7 years Work Sub contract carpenter building new houses Got the running bug as a child at school doing X country, joined a running club train twice a week and raced at the weekend until early teens, then swimming and canoeing took over until my 20’s then Quad bike racing followed late 20 early 30’s did wing the Robin Hood Half somewhere around 2002 in 2:12 then nothing until I got with Lisa and did my first Parkrun on 25/12/2012 but was mainly cycling until just over 4 years ago when Willow was born and going out running was the easy option. Now hoping to do 1000 miles this year.

2. Why do you run?

Because it gives me a buzz also gives me time to think or just switch off depending on how the days gone.

3. What are your PB’s?

5km 22.29 10km 49.11 10 miles 1:21.32 1/2 marathon 1:50:54 All why pushing the double Pushchair

4. What are you aiming for?

No goals as such always find that trying to beat a PB makes me run tense so take them when the come a long and just enjoy the view.

5. What is your most important running achievement?

At the minute my 1:50:54 half my first sub 2 hours which was also a PB by 14 mins, if Carlsberg did runs this was it! Two children, no training, what could go wrong? Not sure I’ll have a run like this again but so glad I got one of them.

6. Which race has been your favourite and why?

Thunder Run 2016 team of 5 male I got asked to join the team thinking I knew who was in it but the team had changed and I felt massively out of my depth (as I look at the other team members as great fast runners) but they couldn’t of been more supportive and i completed 5 laps (50km).

7. What race do you regret and why?

If had to choose one it would be Lichfield half 2016, went off to quick got to 6 miles and ankle started to hurt then knee pain at 9 so ended up walking. Wasn’t happy about it but learn and move on.

8. What race would you like to run and why?

Always dreamed of London Marathon from being a boy, but now I’m thinking more of the Atlantic Coast Challenge (Padstow to Lands end 3 marathons in 3 days)

9. Tell me about how you prepare for a race on the morning of the event.

Coffee, toilet, porridge, coffee, toilet, check kit, check kit again, all why sorting the kids out.

10. Tell me about how you relax post-race.

How do you get chance with kids! Normal food plays a big part and just try to take it easy.

11. What three pieces of advice would you give to fellow runners? (New and seasoned)

1, Never judge, having done 176 Parkruns I’ve learnt a lot about how easy it is too judge (everyone runs for different reason) and be judged (when standing with a double Pushchair towards the front of the start people look and stand in front thinking your going to be slow then you pass them in the first 200 meters) 2, Be happy with your speed/times as there’s always someone out wanting to be as quick as you! 3, Speak/acknowledge other people when out running spread the love of happiness. You may make someone’s day just by said “hello”

12. What is your preferred running route? Path, trail, fell etc?

13. What is your favourite running brand and why?

Brooks like how I can buy a new pairs of trainers and just put them on and cover miles with no problems.

14. Who is your all-time sporting hero?

David Knight multi world enduro champion/ GNCC champion (America)

15. Who is your all-time running hero?

Steve Cram

16. Being part of the Running Dads community, what has this done to inspire and motivate you? Made me get out and run more this year even after some hard days at work with broken nights sleep.
